"The Moment of Truth" or the Simpson-Bowles Report by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, Circa 2010
Executive Summary
Enact the Plan was formed in 2012 by business-entrepreneur Timothy J. Pagliara. With more than 28 years in the financial industry, Pagliara was blown over by the overspending in Washington in recent times. One of the Tim-isms around his workplace is, “Politicians tend to tell us that we either have a spending problem or a taxing problem; well, guess what? We have both.”
There is no way around it; a combination of factors has led to this failure in leadership in Washington. The U.S. sinks further and further into debt each day. You can always watch the debt calculator ever-growing here.
What irked Pagliara the most is that a workable plan had been created to solve the major financial crises in the U.S. back in December of 2010. It was created by a commission of 18 bi-partisan members from the House, the Senate, and from President Obama’s choosing. Yes, President Obama commissioned the plan. The Commission met for 8 months beginning in early 2010 diligently working on America’s deepest economic and structural problems. What surfaced was a plan.
This plan is informally known as Simpson-Bowles plan. More officially, it is called “The Moment of Truth,” a final report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.
Most importantly, it makes sense.
Pagliara came to this conclusion on a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. He has climbed the mountain 5 times to date. Each of his climbs usually has a theme; often the climb is dedicated to his children or loved ones.
On 2011’s climb, Pagliara had yet to think of a theme. He had reached the last leg to the summit and to distract himself from the physical pain and from questioning his sanity of attempting the mountain again, he began to focus on the problems in Washington.
The endless partisan bantering and the incredible mountain of debt consumed his thoughts briefly. He began playing through scenario after scenario and concluded that most of the answers to the current spending/funding problem can be found in the Simpson-Bowles report.
Even though the President commissioned it, he decided he didn’t like the final verdict in the report and has since then ignored it completely.
At the top of Kilimanjaro, Pagliara concluded that the Simpson-Bowles report provided the best opportunity to deal with American’s problems in a comprehensive way. To his great amusement, Pagliara realized that he felt the same way on the way back down the mountain when the altitude wasn’t affecting him as strongly.
He decided that the only way to enact these types of changes and to stop the Simpson-Bowles plan from being ignored, was to start this project.
Enact the Plan is more than a man’s ponderings on a climb; it represents the aspirations for a stronger, more independent America. An America that has not collapsed under its debt, but has joined parties to make a logical plan for the future.
